With his third album, "Neon," Chris Young is showing some real promise of standing out from the pack of genuine country music wannabes for the long haul.

To be honest, I wasn't sure he could do it, and it's good to see it happening.

Keeping it strictly countrified, the talented young Tennessean wrote or cowrote seven of the 10 songs on "Neon," including the hit single "Tomorrow," and I have to say that impresses me for someone of so few years.

Throughout the set, on solidly country songs like "I Can Take It From Here," "Old Love Feels New," "When She's On," "You," and the heart-tugging "Flashlight," Young proves how thoroughly he understands his gift, and never gives into any temptation to, as Kenny Chesney once told me, "rock 'em."

Young stays firmly on country ground, and has shown me that he deserves the opportunity to lead REAL country music into the future alongside other young country mainstays such as Brad Paisley.

Good job, Chris! Keep it country.NEXT Rating: A-
